The Police and Safety Services Department is responsible to the Chief Operating Officer. The department consists of a supervisor, seven full-time officers, two part-time officers, and a full-time staff assistant.
Departmental staff provide Berks campus with police and safety services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The supervisor and all officers are graduates of a certified police academy approved by the Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission.
All members of the department are commissioned under state law and have the same authority as municipal police officers in the Commonwealth. All members of the department complete annual training requirements established by the Commission, which addresses changes and revisions to the Pennsylvania Crimes Code and the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code.
Additionally, all members of the department maintain current certification in both first-aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Periodic in-service training is also provided in subjects directed toward the specific needs of the campus.
A cooperative relationship is maintained by the Penn State Berks Police Department with all surrounding police departments. This includes: Spring Township, Wyomissing Borough, the City of Reading, the Pennsylvania State Police, and various other state and federal agencies. Some of the benefits of these relationships is interaction in various training programs, the use of joint radio systems, coordination of coverage for special events, and most importantly, a mutual effort when investigating serious incidents.
