Profile:
Dr. Rosario Torres is an Assistant Professor of Spanish at Penn State Berks. Her research focuses on contemporary Spanish (Peninsular) Cultural Studies and Literature. She is interested in deconstructing traditional definitions of gender, adopting an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates both semiotic and ideological perspectives. Her research challenges codified representation conventions in contemporary Spanish mass media to suggest new ways of perceiving them and to propose better images as alternative. Consistent with this goal, her article Medios de deseo. Apuntes para el análisis de la representación femenina en la publicidad contemporánea. El caso español (Desiring Media. Methodological Suggestions for the Analysis of Women's Representation in Contemporary Advertising. The Specific Case of Spain), for instance, offers consideration a critical practice that manifests the circulation of meanings between advertising, ideology, and the audience that insists on complicating its discourse.
