In honor of National Veterans Week, Penn State Berks will host two events: a Veterans Recognition Program on Monday, November 11, 2013, beginning at 1 p.m. in the Lion’s Den of the Perkins Student Center, and a Veterans Discussion Panel on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, beginning at 1 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium.

All members of the Penn State Berks campus community are welcome. Seating is limited for the Veterans Day Recognition Program and you must reserve your seat by sending an e-mail to jjw26@psu.edu no later than Friday, November 1, 2013.

The program will begin with the Choir Club singing the National Anthem. Speakers at the event will include Jim Laurie, Instructor in Business, who served in the U.S. Air Force from 1969–1973; Sharron Wagner and her son Steve Wagner, local publishers, authors, and World War II historians; Richard Biehl, Wyomissing, PA, a U.S. Army D-Day survivor who served with the 1st Infantry Division; and Calvin Summers, Reading, PA, who served with the 5th Army Express in North Africa, Italy, and the Pacific. The program will be followed by a luncheon.

On Wednesday, November 13, Penn State Berks will also host a Veterans Discussion Panel titled “Boots to Books: The Transition from Military Life to College Life” to honor our veterans and enlisted individuals, to acknowledge their sacrifices, and to discuss the challenges student veterans face when they return to school after service.

Chancellor R. Keith Hillkirk will provide the opening remarks. Students, faculty, and staff veterans will discuss their experiences in the military during the decade before and after 9/11, and their return to civilian life as students in higher education. All members of the Penn State Berks community are encouraged to attend.
